RONNIE BARKAN is an Israeli activist, a conscientious objector and co-founder of Boycott from Within – a group of conscientious Israelis who support the Palestinian call for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel. He represented the Popular Struggle Coordination Committees at the European Parliament in Brussels, where he challenged EU institutional complicity in Israeli violations. Barkan is concerned about the state of denial in Israeli society and the many myths that Israelis and the rest of the world are trained to believe about the situation in Palestine. He claims that there is no left in Israel nor a peace camp and there never was. Rather, those regarded as liberal Zionists, those who speak of peace within the Zionist framework, are in fact the greatest obstacle to peace in the region and the greatest proponents of apartheid.
Most recently he has worked on the IASA alumni refusal letter, a military refusal call which challenges the role of the Israeli educational system as a whole, being a system of indoctrination which is geared towards the production of obedient soldiers. He also works with the Jewish ultra-Orthodox community which struggles against Zionism and the ongoing attempts for a forced conscription into the Israeli army.
